You don’t get PTO anymore.
You’re responsible for every aspect of your business, from the administration to marketing to the actual work you do every day.
Solopreneur’s have risen in popular lately with people like Justin Welsh showing people it’s possible to create a $5 million/year business without employees.
Looking at Google Trends, the amount of searches of Solopreneurs has been on the rise for the last five years.

You need a figure it out mentality because you’re truly on your own.
It’s both empowering and terrifying.

You can work from home or anywhere with an internet connection, and you can set your own hours based on your preferences.
This means that you can work around your personal life, and you don’t have to worry about missing important family events or appointments.

This can be incredibly rewarding, as you get to see the direct impact of your hard work and decisions.
Challenges of Being a Solopreneur

When you’re starting out, it can be tough to make ends meet, and you may have to take on projects that aren’t your ideal clients or jobs.
You might have months where you don’t make any money at all.
Additionally, as a solopreneur, you’re responsible for everything from marketing to accounting to customer service, which can be overwhelming if you’re not prepared.
You have to do everything yourself or have enough cash to pay a freelancer.
At times, being a solopreneur can also be isolating, as you do not have colleagues to brainstorm with or provide feedback.
It’s important to find a community of fellow solopreneurs or entrepreneurs to connect with and bounce ideas off of.
I recommend posting your journey on a social media platform like LinkedIn or Twitter.
This can also help combat the feeling of imposter syndrome that many solopreneurs experience.
The solopreneur lifestyle can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s not for everyone.
It requires a certain level of self-motivation, organization, and comfort with working alone.

Starting a solopreneur business can be both exciting and daunting.
You have a great idea and the drive to make it happen, but where do you start? The key to building a successful business is to lay a strong foundation.
This involves identifying your niche and target market, creating a solid business plan, and setting up your legal and financial structure.
Identifying Your Niche and Target Market
Before you start your business, it’s important to identify your niche.
For example, my niche is making and selling Notion templates.
Your niche is simply the area in which you specialize.
It’s what sets you apart from your competition.
To identify your niche, start by thinking about the services or products you will provide.
What makes them unique? What value do they offer your customers?
Once you have identified your niche, you need to outline your unique selling proposition (USP).
Your USP is what differentiates you from your competition.
It’s what makes you stand out in a crowded market.
Your USP should be clear, concise, and compelling.
Next, define your target market or demographic for your services.
Knowing your ideal customer is crucial to your marketing efforts and business growth.
Start by creating a customer profile or persona.
This is a detailed profile of your ideal customer.
Think about their age, gender, income, interests, and pain points.
The more you know about your ideal customer, the easier it will be to market your services to them.
The best way to do this is by interviewing your potential customers.
Someone on my podcast recommended this trick:
- Email your prospective customers
- Ask them to a 15 minute meeting
- For every minute you go over the time you’ll pay them $10 dollars
This does two brilliant things:
- Makes absolutely sure you won’t go over time
- Makes people more likely to say yes to you
Ask these people problems:
- What are their painpoints
- What do they wish was better
- How could their life be easier
Interview 5 to 10 people and you’ll start to form a really clear idea about what your customers actually want versus what you think they want.
And there’s a big difference.
Creating a Solid Business Plan
A business plan is a roadmap for your business.
It will help you understand your goals and objectives, establish strategies for marketing and sales, and set realistic financial projections.
Creating a business plan will help you stay organized and focused on your business goals.
Start by outlining your business goals.
My business creates and sells Notion templates and I make income by selling mine and other people’s [Aesthetic Notion templates][(/blog/aesthetic-notion-templates/)].
What do you want to achieve in the short term and long term? Next, identify your target market and how you will reach them.
This includes your marketing and sales strategies.
Finally, set realistic financial projections.
This includes your startup costs, operating expenses, and revenue projections.
Setting Up Your Legal and Financial Structure
Setting up your legal and financial structure is crucial to protecting your personal assets and ensuring your business is compliant with local laws and regulations.
Incorporating your business will ensure that you are protected from personal liability and have access to certain tax benefits.
It’s important to consult with a lawyer or accountant to determine the best legal structure for your business.
You will also need to set up a business bank account and invoicing software.
I personally use Bonsai to manage my customers, create contracts, send invoices, and to get paid.
It’s totally leveled up my freelancing game and makes me look professional.
This will help you keep your personal and business finances separate.
It will also make it easier to track your business expenses and revenue.

As a solopreneur, you are the face of your business, and your brand identity and online presence are what set you apart from the competition.

Designing a Memorable Logo and Brand Identity
Your logo and branding should be unique, memorable, and expressive of your business values and personality.
A good logo is simple, recognizable, and versatile.
Take time to perfect it and make it the face of your business.
Your branding should be consistent across all your marketing materials, including your website, business cards, and social media profiles.

Your website is the cornerstone of your online presence.

Use something like Framer or Ghost to create a website quickly with a template.
I made a list of premium and free Framer templates too.
Don’t spend a ton of time on this yet.
Your website needs to accomplish three goals:
- Explain who you are
- Detail the services you offer
- Give people a way to contact you
Don’t worry about SEO, it takes too long and is too competitive for new website owners.
Get this done fast so you can pitch clients on social media.
Utilizing Social Media and Content Marketing
Building an audience is the single most powerful growth lever for your business.
Imagine if you had 10,000 twitter followers or newsletter subscribers.
You can launch a business with that kind of following.
Social media platforms are a powerful tool for solopreneurs to connect with potential clients, showcase their work, and build their personal brand.
Choose one or two social media platforms that align with your business and create consistent content, including blogs, images, and videos, to showcase your expertise and personality.
I personally like LinkedIn but TikTok is huge for this too. Don’t sleep on TikTok.
Content marketing can help you establish yourself as an expert in your field and build trust with your audience.
It can also help you attract more followers and potential clients to your social media profiles and website.
Building a strong brand identity and online presence takes time and effort, but it is well worth it.

Consider hiring a freelancer through Fiver to do manual tasks like posting on social media for you.
Balancing Work and Personal Life
Now that I’m full time on my business I struggle with balance.
Every day feels like a weekend but holidays don’t feel like holidays because I don’t have paid time off anymore.
I could, and sometimes should, be working all the time.
Other solopreneurs struggle with work-life balance too due to the nature of their business.
Make sure to set clear boundaries between work and personal life and schedule time for self-care and relaxation.
Spend time with your family in the mornings and evenings.
I make time for two family activities every day:
- Walking my dog around the neighborhood with my wife every morning
- Having lunch with my wife
Those two tasks anchor me and also give space to my brain to not always actively think about work.
Prioritizing your personal life will help you stay energized and motivated to continue growing your business.
